#myalgarve: The Sunny Algarve

Meet the amazing humans that inhabit our amazing region, the Algarve. This month we are bringing you their point of view through images perfect for vicarious living: #myalgarve.

It’s all sunshine and the dreamiest of Portuguese spots with Yvette Martins a.k.a. The Sunny Algarve. A travel and lifestyle blogger, she’s full of the BEST tips on where to go and what to do when in the Algarve — and her amazing instagram will fuel your wanderlust and have you booking flights in no time. Yvette leads instagram photo tours of the region and is passionate about helping travelers discover the Algarve like a local.

Here, we quizzed her about some of her favorite things in the Algarve. Make sure you tune into our instagram this week for a sunny dose of the region through Yvette’s eyes.

* What is your favorite local dish or product?

Grilled Sardines! I love local food. I follow a pescatarian diet, so given that the region’s main dishes revolve around fresh fish and seafood, living in the Algarve feels like I live in a “Foodie Haven!” Algarve’s mediterranean food culture appeals to my taste buds like no other – let’s just say that simple ingredients like virgin olive oil, coarse sea salt, fresh herbs like oregano and cilantro used to season fish, and local produce make me happy.

 * What do you do on a Sunday in the Algarve?

Sunday is my “chill day” and my favorite things to do are either to get out and explore our beautiful coastline or to stay in and cook.

Having lived in the Algarve for over 25 years I’ve explored our coast from east to west, but, as a photographer, no matter how many times I visit the same places I am always able to find unexpected inspiration — a different angle or another perspective always fuels my passion for capturing unique places and collecting moments on camera. On Sundays I like to get out with my husband and discover beautiful landscapes that inspire us.

When I’m not off exploring, I love getting creative in the kitchen on Sundays and cooking with local ingredients. During the week I have less time and I eat out at restaurants a lot, but Sunday is my “eat at home” day. I also call it “Petisco Caseiro Day!” Things like ameijoas, berbigão, and camarão are the most common dishes I whip up at home, and if I’m feeling really creative I’ll bake.

* What is your very favorite place in the Algarve?

The dunes at Praia Grande in Armação de Pêra, because I can get lost in kilometers of white sand and golden wildflowers and be inspired by a breeze of blue. These dunes are aromatized by a unique scent of sand-grown curry and Portuguese thyme.

* Describe the Algarve in three words.

Happiness is everywhere.
